If you’re anything like me, you struggle to concentrate when your surroundings are chaotic or when items seem out of place. And yes, this also applies to the fridge.

However, I didn’t always feel this way. In my younger days, I didn’t prioritize keeping things organized at home – I owe my mother for instilling in me the importance of a home that looks like it’s ready for an estate agent’s photo shoot.

My mother shared many helpful tips and tricks with me, including the best ways to utilize those small cupboards that are often found above kitchen refrigerators. Do you know the ones I’m talking about? If you have them too, keep reading to discover how to make the most of that space.

At first, those small cupboards above the fridge may not seem particularly useful.

They often lack the size for larger items, and storing plates or cups up high isn’t very practical. So, what can you do with them?
If you’re unsure about how to use these cupboards, we’re here to provide some clever tips and tricks.
Consider using them for storage of kitchen gadgets that you don’t use frequently:
As mentioned, these cupboards might not be suitable for items you use daily, but they can definitely hold things that you only need occasionally. Think about food processors, blenders, waffle makers, and similar appliances.

Canned products and baking essentials

Most canned goods and produce have impressively long shelf lives, which means you can store them up high and not worry if they’re forgotten for a bit. And what about those baking essentials you might only reach for on weekends?

Cookbooks

Do you have a few cookbooks that you don’t want cluttering your space? I certainly do, so I utilize the top section of my cupboard to keep my books organized.

Pantry items and spices

Just like we discussed with canned foods, there are probably items in your pantry that would fit perfectly in that cupboard. You might also think about getting a small spice rack to keep your cooking spices up there.

Kitchen towels

Household items such as kitchen towels, which you might purchase in bulk (my wife always does), can be conveniently stored here.
Fine china

Do you have plates or cutlery sets that are only used for special occasions? It makes sense to store them above the fridge, reducing the chance of your kids getting to them!
Be careful

It should be obvious, but we’ll mention it anyway: exercise caution when opening and closing those cupboards. If you’re lifting items up there, ensure they’re not too heavy to safely bring down.
Always use a sturdy stool or step ladder to reach whatever you’ve stored up high, and remember that the heat from the fridge below makes it less suitable for certain products.

A tidy and organized home has its advantages, especially when everything is in its designated spot.
